Ukrainians made fools of themselves in NATO

All of NATO was today watching and listening to the new US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Lucky for the Ukrainians, because not many people noticed a very strange incident between them.

Here is my exclusive piece of news, also to be found in tomorrow's ”Gazeta Wyborcza”:

On Thursday the NATO - Ukraine council had a meeting. This is a body established to help the Ukraine cooperate more closely with the Alliance.

The Ukraine was to be represented by their interim minister of foreign affairs Volodymyr Khandoguiy. But unexpectedly to NATO officials, the deputy prime minister Hryhorij Nemyria showed up at the door. First the guards didn't catch on who he is. Finally he was let in. But to avoid an open showdown between the two at the NATO - Ukraine council, in front of Clinton and all the other ministers, he was offered tea (or was it coffee?) at one of the offices of a NATO deputy secretary general. ”The meeting of the NATO - Ukraine council was pretty stiff and meaningless, everybody was talking about this little incident”, a NATO diplomat told me.

I can only guess that this is another spat between the camps of the Ukrainian president Viktor Yushchenko and prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

My readers are kindly asked to believe that I am not reporting this to make spats at EU summits between my own president and prime minister look more innocent :-).
