Vaclav Klaus in charge of the EU?The Czech presidency might be in even more trouble than expected. We might get a Klaus man heading it instead of prime minister Topolanek. As recently as yesterday morning the danger didn't seem real. Mr. Topolanek and deputy prime minister Aleksandr Vondra were assuring everybody in the European Parliament that they will carry on with the presidency and there is nothing to worry about. But now gossip from Prague has it that the eurosceptic president Vaclav Klaus might appoint somebody else than Topolanek to form a new (temporary?) government. The two men are meeting today, but already yesterday night Topolanek attacked Klaus. "It was Klaus who stood behing the fall of my government. Of course he doesn't want the Lisbon Treaty or our success in leading the EU", he said. This suggests that there is an open war between the two men and that Topolanek does not expect to be allowed to continue. A change of government would be distastrous for two reasons. 1. You don't change a horse in the middle of the race, the current team has the issues under control and a new one would take some time (like 3 months?) to get to know them; 2. We would have a Klaus man, or in fact Klaus himself heading the EU. It doesn't get much worse than that, does it? czwartek, 26 marca 2009, dominique
